“You can’t have everything you want—
but you can almost have anything if you’re willing to make a choice.”

In our last two Influential Leadership Tips, we talked about (1) the real reason behind resistance to change, and (2) the concept of the Threshold of Activation. Now let’s look at how this works in practice.
In today’s 6 minute video, Dave walks through various scenarios to illustrate the concept of tension management. Learning to apply this concept is a true game-changer for being more influential in all situations.
“Tension is the controlling factor in any influencing situation.”
This also applies to job interviews.
Why do candidates who are clearly qualified often not land the job?
A strong résumé and expertise only address the logic side of the equation. They don’t address the emotional connection that makes a hiring manager excited about adding you to their team. They get you in the door, but don’t create the hiring urgency that generates a job offer.
You get hired when a decision-maker feels productive tension. Your job search strategy should focus less on selling yourself and more on surfacing the right tension.
